
Apparently, the popularity of the iPhone has also pulled Microsoft to jump onto the bandwagon of developing applications for the iPhone. The first application developed by Microsoft Live Labs has been unveiled and it’s called the Seadragon Mobile.
The Seadragon Mobile is basically a free demo application for the iPhone that adds feasibility to image/photo display technology on the iPhone. The Seadragon app allows infinite zooming in, out of an image. You can use this app to zoom around photos over the Internet, regardless the bandwidth constraint and image size.
iPhone is chosen as the test bed of the Seadragon application is because of Microsoft believes that the iPhone is equipped with hardware that is better than most other phones. And the iPhone is equipped with a graphics processing unit that is not found on most phones in the market, which is capable handling the photo/image zooming capabilities required by the Seadragon application.
In short, the Seadragon mobile app allows you to use your iPhone to view thousands of images over the air, even viewing photos with massive gigapixels. You can also use the app to zoom around the 2D images that make up Photosynth collections. Besides, you can also create and upload Seadragon “Deep Zoom” images online and let others to use the Seadragon technology to view them on line. Zooming in and out of an image on your iPhone can be done using your fingers on the iPhone’s touchscreen.
