I used to be a big fan of Linux, although the recent years that I’ve been more on Windows due to some development work that I’ve been involved need me to be on Windows. But Linux is still my preferred server platform. And now if you’re also a big fan of Linux and you wish to get your iPhone to run the Linux OS, it’s now been made possible by the iPhone Dev Team.
The iPhone Dev Team member, planetbeing has reverse engineered the Apple’s hardware drivers, making it possible to run Linux OS on the iPhone. And it can be controlled with a USB keyboard running off the iPhone’s multiple multi-purpose port.
The Linux kernel 2.6 has been ported over to Apple’s iPhone platform. It can be run on the first, second generation of iPhones as well as the first generation of iPod Touch. This is still a very early port over of the Linux OS to iPhone which has only very minimal features. It’s still lacking lots of drives but at least it offers an alternative choice of OS you can run on jailbroken iPhone.
The Linux port on iPhone currently supports the framebuffer driver, serial driver, serial over USB driver, interrupts, MMU, clock etc. And the dev team is working on porting more over including NAND memory, wireless networking, touchscreen drivers, sound, accelerometer, and the most important is the baseband chip, which makes the iPhone communicate with the cellular networks.

Running Linux on an iPhone would be a procedure that could impress multiple people that it was pointed out to. It might add to it if someone could find special uses for Linux on the phone, but the use of it in general on a mobile device is something worth mentioning to other iPhone users.

Yeah, that’s great and fun and everything, but what about getting the Iphone OS to operate on other platforms? on a PC would be fun, but on a HTC touchscreen would be out of control.
You think Apple is shitting themselves over hackintoshes!
