UbiGreen, a cellphone app tells if you’re a “green” traveler

UbiGreen is such an interesting cellphone app that keeps track of how you travel and how “green” your trip is. How green you’re is all depends whether you’re to travel in a train, car, bike or you just walk. This application is jointly developed by University of Washington and Intel.

The concern is if you choose to walk then you’ll burn some fat, save some money and since you don’t travel in a vehicle, you also save some pounds of carbon dioxide, and you’re greener in this case. The UbiGreen uses the built-in accelerometer of your mobile phone to detect whether you’re walking, running, biking or you’re in a vehicle.

Once it’s detected that you’re in a vehicle, it’ll then pop up a questionnaire to ask further if you’re traveling in a train, a car or something else. On the screen of your mobile phone, the UbiGreen will show a tree. The greener you travel, the tree will become leafier. Eventually, the tree will be able to loose or gain leaves automatically based on the information gathered from the cellphone’s accelerometer.

The team has also developed another application, UbiFit, which is the app that the idea of UbiGreen originates from. The UbitFit is to keep track of your exercise. Similarly, it shows you with a bigger garden of flowers the healthier you’re being. The above image, on the left is the UbiGreen and on the right is the UbiFit.
