RED’s DSMC may sound new to you, it’s some kind of highly-configurable camera system for still and motion images, which RED makes to address the DSLR market, or maybe to replace DSLRs. RED has just announced its DSMC (Digital Stills and Motion Camera) System, which are two brains of camera that let you add on any components to make up any camera you like.
The two brains announced by RED are the Scarlet and the EPIC, which you can configure them into any configuration of camera of your choice. That is the idea of the two brains of RED, by adding/mixing components from various makers, you can build your camera body to anything you want.
The Scarlet is dubbed as professional brain, but the EPIC is cooler, dubbed as Master Professional “brain”. These two brains are built upon Mysterium-X and Mysterium Monstro sensors which start at 2/3-inch and end at a whopping 6×17-cm. When a new sensor is available, you just need to upgrade the brain.
Scarlet will be launched in 4 choices, ranging from $2,500 to $12,000 with a variety of lens mounts, such as you can choose from those like Canon, Nikon etc. And they’re capable of shooting 3K at 120fps on up to 6k at 30fps.
The Epic also offers similar lens mounts, and capable of shooting 5K at 100fps (costs $28k) to 9K at 50fps ($45k). There will also be one that is capable of 28k at 25fps, which will be available only in 2010 for $55k.
Still images of these two brains will range from 4.8 megapixel up to an amazing 261 megapixels. The first Scarlet system can be expected as early as Spring 2009 while EPIC will only arrive in Summer It’s definitely a costly gadget to play with. The brain is just the starting cost.
