iPhone, no matter it’s the first generation or the 3G version, they all have no capability to let you hook them up to your computer and use them as an EDGE or 3G/HSPA modem for surfing the Internet.
If you don’t own a 3G or EDGE USB modem, and iPhone is the only gadget that you always bring along, you’d definitely wish that you could use your iPhone as an EDGE/3G modem and hook it up to your computer for surfing the Internet. Addition has released their new application, iPhoneModem, which lets you turn your iPhone into a 3G/EDGE modem which you can then use it for your laptop to surf the Internet.
The iPhoneModem is only released as an unofficial app which can be used on jail-broken iPhone only. It seems like Apple doesn’t allow this kind of applications to be sold on the App Store, which is due to the pressure from the carriers. Another application called NetShare, which does the same 3G/EDGE tethering function as what the iPhoneModem does, has been pulled down twice by Apple App store.
Addition has even submitted iPhone Modem for Apple’s approval to be listed on App Store since July 08, but until now, they haven’t heard any response from Apple yet. iPhoneModem sounds relatively simpler to use. All you need to do is to install their desktop app that is made available for the Mac OS X 10.5 on your laptop and install the iPhoneModem application on your jail-broken iPhone using Cydia. The iPhoneModem works with iPhones with firmware 2.x only.
Addition is currently working on a desktop client that has wider support of computer’s OSes, the two in their plan are for the Mac OS X 10.4 and also Microsoft Windows. And they’re also working for the iPhoneModem which works with iPhone firmware 1.x.
Usage: “After installing the desktop client, launch it and press connect, this should automatically create an ad-hoc network named iPhoneModem on your Mac. Then, on your iPhone, go to your settings and join the iPhoneModem network. Once connected, open the iPhoneModem app on the iPhone. It will automatically connect, and you should be able to surf the net using the browser on your desktop or laptop computer.”
Currently, the iPhoneModem is available as a shareware, and if you don’t want the registration window to keep popping up every time you launch it, then just pay for a price of $9.99 to license it.

Hi,
I downloaded the iphone modem softyware to try out. i cannot however install the application. It requires the support of .Net framework 3.5 softyware to support installation. i had to go to Microsoft website to download the .Net frame (54MB).
The Ipone modem still cannot be installed, the display error is ” The installer was interruoted before Iphone Modem could be installed You need to restart the installer to try again.’
despite many attempts, the IphoneModem cannot be installed.
any advice.

I’ve tried this iphonemodem app aswell, great idea but vista hangs saying identifying and then you get a local only connection so you have a network but not internet connection which is less than useless really.
Not really any support available and of course am loathed to pay for the app until I have it working.
