While I was just commenting about platter-based external hard drive is vulnerable to drop, the New Yorker has taken a totally new approach by storing the collection of its magazines starting from 1925 onto a USB portable hard drive.
I believe that they’re storing those soft copies of the magazines onto a platter-based hard drive which has much lower cost. But, indeed, it’s great for some people who might wanna reference some back issue one day. The over 4,000 issues of the New Yorker magazines are to be stored on a 80GB external hard drive.
The complete New Yorker portable hard drive is now on sale for $179. Once you’ve got it, you could then hook it up to your computer’s USB port to let you have access and read through every article, short story, sometimes controversial cartoon, and every advertisement that was printed in the magazine since 1925. And the best is if you order now, you’ll also get a DVD with updated content in December.
Of course, this is simply a new approach and follows the latest trend. And some more portable hard drive gets cheaper these days and the size is super easy to handle. But do handle the New Yorker portable hard drive with care without dropping it for many times. But I believe the future versions will come in SSD-based hard drives when their prices get little cheaper.
