Air purifier hides in a concrete

August 7th, 2008 by ketyung

Air purifying concreteYou wanna fight against the air pollution but you don’t want something or a gadget that is too prominent telling the world that you’re simply paranoid, overly worried about the harms that pollution could bring to you.

Twente University has got a new idea that allows you to keep the air in your house or office building crystal clear, without telling everybody that you’ve got such an air purifier installed. The secret behind is the air purifier is embedded within a piece of concrete that makes up the walls of your building.

The concrete comes with a titanium dioxide-based additive, with the help of sunlight, it’ll be able to convert the nitrogen oxide particles emitted by vehicle exhaust pipes into nitrates which brings no harm to human. And just a single shower of rain will wash the air-purifying concrete clean, making it reusable over time. They’re going for a test of these concretes on a road in the small Dutch town of Hengelo, which it’ll be paved with these air-purifying concretes.

It sounds pretty promising having this way of fighting air pollution. With the roads and buildings are all covered with the air-purifying concretes is one great way of reducing polluted air. The dream of building a city full of fresh air seems to be not far away.
