SSD (Solid State Drive) has many advantages over the hard disk drive. Of course the first to count is the speed, which SSD is much faster in speed than any hard disk drive in the market. Perhaps, in few years’ time, hard drive would have disappeared in this world. And the permanent storage in gadgets and computers will be SSD only.
Western Digital has been a long-time player in making hard disk drives. When SSD gets more mature, meaning they’ll most likely have to close down their business. Or the could simply step into manufacturing SSDs too, to compete with others who’re already in this line.
It seems like WD doesn’t wanna stop there, and they’re working ahead to make its hard drive products as competitive as the SSDs. Their answer is to produce hard drives in its Raptor range that would spin at a whopping 20,000 rpm.
The WD hard drive, reportedly in development, is apparently a 2.5-inch hard drive, which is similar to all other Raptor range hard drives (e.g VelociRaptor VR150) , that come with a 3.5-inch caddy, making it flexible to fit any of the two sizes. However, the caddy of this new 20,000 RPM hard drive will act both as a heat sink and also for noise reduction, which isn’t like the predecessor, which the caddy works as a heat sink only.
The sources also say that WD is to market the 20,000-rpm drive as a “silent” drive for staying more appealing. Analysts predict that SSDs will take over all platter-based drive in about 12-18 months, once they’ve managed to develop a competitive enough entry-price. The move of Western Digital to squeeze its last resources to produce a high-speed hard drive, is most probably to hope to make some bucks to fund their own SSD development.
