Diabetes has killed many lives. We must be highly aware of it, finding ways for early detection and take necessary prevention. If you’re kind of paranoid, it’ll be neat to have a check anytime you feel like, such as you’ve just had an overly sweet meal.
In order to have a frequent check on your blood sugar level, you must bring along a portable glucose checker. One that allows you to check based on the glucose level in your urine is definitely handier than one that needs you to shred some blood. As anytime, you could simply find a washroom, urinate and take the measurement.
Tanita Japan has announced its world’s first portable urine glucose monitor, the UG-201. The device allows you to urinate on its sensor, and it just takes about 6 seconds to come out with the result. Although the UG-201 doesn’t measure the sugar level in your blood directly, but by measuring the sugar level in your urine also closely reflects the blood sugar level. This helps in early detection or prevention of metabolic syndrome and diabetes.
The UG-201 device employs a biosensor based on the enzyme electrode method. It’s got a cap which has preservation solution in it to protect the sensor. Once the cap is removed, and urine is poured directly onto the sensor, the measurement result will be out in about 6 seconds.

The UG-201 device is powered by one CR2032 lithium watch battery, which can last for about 180 days, if you’re a considerably frequent checker, who takes measurement up to 3 times a day. The main unit measures 68 x 118 x 22mm and weighs about 80g without the battery. It will go on sale in Japan for about $153, which it comes as a starter set that consists of the main unit, sensor cartridge etc. The sensor needs a replacement every two months, which will cost you about $57 a piece.
