Although USB HSPA/3G modems are commonly available these days, but it’d be nice if your laptop had come with one integrated, which you don’t have to spend extra bucks just to get one. And it always sticks on your laptop, which forgetting to bring one along is not a problem anymore while you’re traveling.
The Swedish mobile company Ericsson has announced that they’ll supply HSPA/GPS modules for new Dell laptops, starting in Q2 2008. The module does both HSPA (High-speed Packet Access) and GPS, which ensures you that you’re always able to get hooked up to high-speed 3G Internet and to find your direction home, while you’re on the road.
The Ericsson’s HSPA/GPS module allows a top speed of 14.4Mbps data download in theory. But with the current deployments of all the 3G networks across the world, it can reach at least 7.2Mbps. Ericsson says that there are about 185 commercial networks around the world can reach the mentioned 7.2Mbps download speed.
The pricing details for this HSPA/GPS module is not yet announced. But it’s not the first time that Ericsson has done this kind of HSPA/GPS module for laptops. They’ve closed a deal with Lenovo back in February for integrating mobile broadband and GPS module into Lenovo ThinkPad laptops. Ericsson expects that by 2011, there would be about 200 million laptops sold each year and with at least half of them would come with the HSPA broadband module integrated.
