Flash-based or Sold State drives will be the permanent storage that we should start eyeing on these days, to replace the slow hard disk drives in our computers. We all know there are many goodies carried by solid state drives, such as no moving parts that makes no noise and consumes comparatively much lower power etc.
Super Talent has just rolled out a new line of MasterDrive solid state drives, which are 100% interchangeable with hard drives. But, of course, they all work much faster than the hard drives, consume less power, lighter, and are far more rugged and reliable.
The MasterDrive SSDs use NAND flash, which has many advantages over the hard disk drives that uses magnetic platters as the storage medium. As mentioned SSDs are completely silent, consume only a fraction of power of HDDs, produce less heat so the battery of your gadgets will last longer.
The MasterDrive SSDs also use high-bandwidth SATA II interface that can deliver a data transfer rate of 3Gbps and offers broad compatibility with motherboards. The MasterDrive SSD has a 2.5 inch form factor and Super Talent has designed the drives with their proprietary ear-leveling algorithms, which is said to extend the the life of these SSDs.
You’ll get three categories for the MasterDrive line, which are the BX, DX and MX. The The MasterDrive BX line of SATA-I SSDs use SLC NAND Flash to offer exceptionally high capacity (a maximum of 256GB available), fast read and write speeds and the greatest possible reliability and endurance. The DX drives also use SLC NAND Flash and gives sequential read and write speeds up to 120 and 70 MB/sec respectively, and backed by three-year warranty. The maximum capacity available in this category is 120GB. MasterDrive MX drives use MLC Flash to achieve maximum sequential read/write speeds of 120 and 40 MB/sec, and include a 1-year warranty.
A solid state drive is still far more expensive compared to most available hard disk drives. Such as a 60GB MasterDrive MX SSD will cost you $450 on eWiz. You’ll definitely spend much less for a hard disk drive that has same storage capacity. In fact, you’ll hardly find a hard disk drive that still remains at the low-capacity side, such as 60GB. Can you imagine that an 128GB MasterDrive BX SSD carries a whopping price tag of $3,283 ?
