Although SSD (Solid State Drive) is the next permanent storage for your computer that you should be looking at for super fast speed of access. But SSD is still pretty much behind in terms of storage capacity compared to hard drive, which the most you can get from SSD is only 128GB. And also the price of an SSD is much higher than a hard drive.
If you’re passionate about hard drive speed, the newly rolled-out Western Digital 300GB VelociRaptor hard drive will surely get you excited. The drive is claimed to be 35% faster than previous WD Raptors and is deemed as the world’s fastest SATA hard drive.
The 300GB VelociRaptor features 3Gbps SATA interface, 16MB cache, and impressive 1.4 million hour MTBF. The drive is only qualified as a 3.5-inch-like hard drive. Why is it considered as a 3.5-inch-like only instead of a full 3.5 inch? In fact it’s a 2.5-inch hard drive which comes wrapped in the IcePack frame - the super efficient cooling frame which also makes it easy to be installed in a standard 3.5 inch bay.
Overall the VelociRaptor drive provides the fastest access time, the best transfer rates, excellent application results, amazingly low surface temperature and produces acceptable noise-level.
The only drawback is the drive would have problem to go into existing 3.5-inch hot swap bays, due to the SATA and the power connectors aren’t located at the standardized position.
It’ll be made available exclusively on Alienware’s ALX gaming desktop this month and then up for grabs for everybody with $300 to burn starting mid of May.
