The Japanese researchers are getting real serious into making cyborgs – the half-human and half-machine “creature”. Some researchers at Osaka University in Japan are now looking into the possibility of opening up the human skull for planting a little sensor chip in the brain in order to have full control of those robotic limbs.
The sensor to be planted inside the skull is meant for capturing the brain wave in a more accurate manner. Capturing the brain wave outside of the skull is very much less accurate than capturing inside the brain. The researchers do it by placing an electrode sheet onto the patient’s gray matter. Basically, planting the sensor will not require penetrating into the brain, the little sheet just rests atop the central sulcus, and it allows scientists to record what happens when the patient moves the robotic arms and limbs.
The kind of open skull (or invasive) surgery might sound little scary and worrying to some patients. The researchers of Osaka University might face little problem to get enough volunteers to go for their open head surgery, though they claim they’ve got four now. The system is said to give around 80% accuracy, which is basis of how robotic limbs to get controlled.
