Racetrack memory is the new kind of memory for your gadgets developed by IBM, which is claimed to allow you store up to half a million songs on your MP3 player. This new memory technology has been showcased in showcased in this month’s Science, technology magazine. And it says that it uses electron spin to store your data.
The Racetrack memory is different from any hard disk drive that doesn’t involve any mechanical parts. Meaning it gives super-high-speed reading and writing times. Transferring your songs and media to it is extremely fast and of course is much faster than the speed of today’s fastest hard drive.
Besides, making use of the spinning of electrons to store you data also keeps its power consumption to minimal. There seems to be no detailed information of how much faster in reading and writing speeds compared to the comparatively faster solid state or flash drive technology. But the Racetrack is claimed to upstage the flash as it can virtually last for a lifetime, whereas flash memory will wear out after a few thousand usage cycles.
The Racetrack is definitely the next generation of memory for much higher storage capacity and super high speed that we want on our gadgets. But too bad is it seems to need another decade for IBM to make this new technology to make its way into consumers’ devices.
