In many situations that you’d have to work on a shared PC that has a number of users. Such as your home PC might be shared among a number of your family members. Or you work in an office space that resources are pretty limited, or your boss is little stingy so you and a few of your colleagues have to work on a shared computer or laptop. Working on a shared computer is nothing wrong, but you’ll definitely want a little privacy and security for your data. It’d be nice that you could have your own private or protected drives or disks to store your own files on the shared PC.
Here comes the Dekart Private Disk, which is a simple software solution that you can use to create many private and securely protected virtual drives on your shared computer. Each private drive created using the Dekart Private drive is protected by a password and the data stored on the private drives are securely encrypted.
The Dekart Private Disk is a fairly easy to use software. Just install it on your computer, you’ll then be able to use it to create virtual private disks. After installation of the Dekart Private Disk, you’ll be able to access it either from the icon on your desktop or from the Programs menu of your Windows. The Private Disk software will first present you the little Window as shown below, which gives you options whether you wanna connect, create, delete or check the properties.
Go to “create” to create your very first private disk, if it’s the first time for you to use this software. To create a private disk, you need to choose a drive letter for it and tell the software what file image to use. The file image is an ecrypted file which the Dekart Private Disk stores the information about the created private drive. Just give it a file name and proceed for the drive creation by clicking “create”, it’ll then prompt you for a new password and the software will show you the strength of the password you’ve provided.
After entering the password, voila, your private disk has now been created but it needs to be formatted for completion. This could be the little step that would put you off as it did to me. As it’ll prompt you with a formatting window and when you click start it’ll then prompt you with a pretty scary message saying that “formatting will erase all data on disk”. Just go ahead, as this is NOT going to erase any part of your existing physical drives. It’s just a step needed for completing the creation of a private (or virtual) drive.
After creating the private drive, you’ll now see an extra drive on your “My Computer” denoted by the drive letter that you chose during the creation. Now you can store your private or highly confidential data or files on this newly created private drive. After finishing all your work that you store on this private drive, and you’re about to leave the computer, be sure to use the Dekart Private Disk to disconnect the drive. Therefore the private drive is hidden from other users. And only you who has the password is able to connect and access the drive. So, the next time that you come to work on the computer,you need to use the Dekart software to connect to the private drive, which it prompts you for a password and the drive’s image file. Be sure you remember where you’ve stored the image file and your password.
The Dekart Private Disk also comes with a few great features, which one of them is the disk firewall. The disk firewall lets you allow only certain software on your computer to access the files or data stored on the private drive. This is a plus, in the case that your computer is not updated with latest virus pattern, but with the disk firewall on, viruses and trojans are not able to access the private drives.
The Dekart Private drive employs the 256-bit AES standard encryption method, which is highly secure and doesn’t hinder your computer’s performance. I tested it on a laptop that has averagely low memory of 256MB only and it works fine. The current version 2.10 of Dekart private drive, works with various versions of Microsoft Windows OS including Windows 95,98,ME,NT,2000,XP, Vista, 2003 and even the 64-bit versions of Windows XP, Vista and 2003.
Overall, it’s an useful software for a computer that is shared by many users but giving each user to own one or more private drives by having their own password for each.
