Robot Crab – amphibious robot, best used for exploring undersea world!

Robot crab - crab-liked machine for exploring undersea world
Some Lego fun of a MSc student, which has built him a prototype of Robot Crab, which is claimed to be the perfect robot to help scientists to explore the underwater world better. The inventor of this robot crab is Charles Gage, who is a MSc student at University of Bath.

A crab-like robot is the perfect amphibious machine that the scientists have been looking for to help better explore the undersea world. The way the crabs walk, their posture, gait and stride length are applied to this Robot Crab, making it the best survivor both moving in underwater and on the beach.

The robot was built to have features of crabs such as four pairs of legs divided into halves. With stable biomimetic design, the robot crab is allowed to change in direction flexibly and giving no mechanical interference between legs.

The robot crab can also vary its walking speed by changing stride length, just as what crabs do in the wild. The robot crab is very energy-efficient and has been tested on Minehead beach in Somerset, in early September 2007. It walked well with great stability on the beach, scrambling over pebbles and small stones easily. The inventor of this robot crab will continously improve the prototype with full amphibious capabilities and stability and hope to attract some potential investors.
