The newly announced Apple Laptop - MacBook Air, is touted as the world’s thinnest laptop. The laptop measures from 0.16″ to 0.76″ (when closed) in thickness and weighs only 3 pounds.

The MacBook Air is built with aluminum case design. The laptop is so thin, which you can even slide it into a standard manila envelope.

For the features: MacBook Air comes with a 13.3-inch widescreen (1280×800) backlit LED display. The display provides instant full-screen brightness the moment you open MacBook Air. The laptop also comes with full-sized QWERTY despite the slim body. The keyboard is equipped with backlighting which turns on automatically when you get into darkness. An oversize track pad is included which supports multi-touch technology.

The MacBook Air features either a custom-built 1.6GHz or 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor as the options. And this laptop carries the slimmest battery that Apple has ever produced. While actively accessing Internet over WiFi, the battery can last for 5 hours. MacBook Air is intended for the wireless world, is well equipped with wireless technologies including latest WiFi, 802.11n (Wireless N) and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR.

MacBook Air doesn’t come with any CD/DVD drive in order to maintain its super thinness. Since it’s well equipped with wireless capabilities, so you’re urged to watch DVD by renting movies from the Apple iTunes store. And backing up of files is urged to do it using Apple’s new Time Capsule instead of backing up to stack of optical discs. However, Apple still leaves an option for the stubborns who really want an optical disc. You can make use of the new feature, a software called Remote Disc, which you need to install to allow you to borrow optical drive from computers nearby. Of course, you have option to hook up to external DVD drive, since the laptop is equipped with a single USB 2.0 port. And also hooking up to external monitor is possible via its micro-DVI connector.
The base model with the 1.6GHz CPU, 80GB hard drive will cost you around $1800. But the model with 1.8GHz processor will cost you almost double, which carries a price tag of $3098. But, this model uses the super speedy 64GB solid state drive instead of hard drive. It’s available for pre-order for those in States now at Apple store.

I value lightness more than thickness. 3 pounds is slightly more than 1 kg. Is there any notebook out there (runs Windows, not Mac) that weighs less than a kilo?

Well, certain UMPCs would weigh less than 1kg. But I haven’t got any notebook (with 12″ or 14″ screen) in mind that is less than 1kg, once I’ve found one will let you know or write a post
