Alereon and SunPlusIT have teamed up, trying to bring wireless USB closer to reality. They’re working on the world’s first worldwide wireless USB hard drive reference design, which is based on Alereon’s AL5000 WUSB chipset. Being worldwide means it covers the entire spectrum used by WiMedia, which is from 3.1Ghz to 10.6Ghz, and complies with the requirements set by local authorities.
Up to today, we’re still hard to see any practical wireless USB gadgets out there in the market. Those wireless USB devices found in the market are mostly facing problems such as failing to fit in certain spectrum in certain countries or interoperability issue etc. But the move of these two companies at least brings a step closer to reality. The press release also tells that Toshiba might retail an external drive based on the same design. Wireless USB is definitely that next thing to cling on to, especially for those who hate tangling wires. The wireless USB can peak at 480Mbps over short distances.
