I reluctantly bought the MagicJack a few months ago for $40 at WalMart. I plugged it into my PC and it proceeded to download the software, which took about 2 minutes or less. I had to register online and then I was ready to go. I have made close to 60 calls with MagicJack and haven't had any problems that I can complain about. You can go to http://voiprev.com to read and submit reviews on MagicJack and many of the other popular VoIP providers. The $40 I spent on Magicjack for 1 year of service was just about what i was paying for one month of at&t CallVantage service. I was skeptical, but I am now a convert. I also understand that the service is as good as your broadband internet connection.

I just wanted to add my two cents here about MJ and their service. A couple of days ago we had garbled service, couldn't understand incoming or outgoing calls. I have the device setup on a XP Dell Inspiron Notebook computer. It is on a Cable modem connected through a Netgear router. I got on MJ site and started a chat session. The first person went through a couple of things with me and it didn't help at all.
So he turned me over to a 2nd level help person. This guy went through more stuff including opening up several ports on my router. I did get the problem fixed and was very impressed with their support. I would suggest if you are having problems you might use a chat session as it sure fixed my problem!

I received 2 Magic Jacks and sent them back in one week because they didn’t work well. 2 weeks after that Magic Jack charged my credit card with over 100 dollars and I haven’t gotten it back yet. They don’t have a phone and their chat line is not help. Be careful doing business with these people

I tried MJ on my other PC yesterday: it's a dual-boot system so I first tried on Windows XP. Didn't work; different error message, but didn't work. Then I rebooted in on Win2K3 and it detected and started installing and I configured it.
However, when I took it back to my original home PC, same error as stated yesterday. I had been planning to replace the very old USB ports on that PC for some time now; I'll get that done and see if the problem goes away.
Based on the few hours of research I did, it seems MJ's overall behavior is very fickle. In fact, there're some pretty unhappy customers who's only advice is to never buy it. But I guess they got the wrong end of MJ's arbitrary behavior and didn't persist long enough. Just trying out various things makes it start working.

Just got my magic jack and loaded it on a Windows XP computer. You must REGISTER the unit to get it work and choose a number. I was up and receving calls within 5 minutes....seriously.
Very simple, and the sound is the same as the Vonage I ma currently using and paying $35 a month for. So far very happy with Magic Jack

I'm facing the same problem that Mostafa encounters. When I plugged in my new MJ into the PC, the blue light turns on for a couple of seconds and then goes off, with the message on screen "one of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it".
Apparently, I've seen many others face this issue, but none of the solutions recommended so far (from rebooting, to switch-off completely and restarting, to deleting certain registry entries, etc.) has worked.

Any help will be highly appreciated.
Thanks,
Sajid.

Dudes! Get a grip! This is just a nice little gadget to make calling cheap from home. Most of you have a cellphone anyway so what if it ain't perfect. BTW, "sometme in 2009" for porting your existing number to majic jack is quickly running out of time. My bet is you won't be able to port your current landline number, ever.

Don't buy into this scam. The Magic Jack is not reliable. I have had two fail in the last 60 days. Also, the magic jack is a scam to get their internet use tracking software on your computer, and this software, once installed, cannot be easily removed.

Magic Jack is the best thing since sliced bread. i am in the U.S. and sent one to my gf in the U.K. that I set up with a number local to me. we have saved a ton of money. is it perfect? no, there are drawbacks as there are to anything when you look to cut costs. the point of it is to eliminate the landline and still use a regular phone. it does that. unplug your phone from the wall and instead plug it into the MJ. it's that simple. call forwarding works like a charm. some things i would like to see changed or adjusted would be to port in an old number (not too big a deal) and to be able to change how many rings b4 voicemail picks up (this for me is a big deal cuz it seems it should be a simple fix). also i would like to personalize the greeting in voicemail (again, i would think simple). one complaint is when their website goes down and i cant change the call forwarding setting right away...rare but does happen. they have international call rate but i find them to be a bit high when calling some countries and also mobile phones in those countries especially. i use a calling card instead...problem solved. anyway, if somebody doesnt like the MJ then i guess its a case of either they got a glitchy product in which case it should be returned for another (sold just about everywhere now btw) or its just not for them or perhaps they are just plain dumb (which maybe isnt their fault...could be genetic lol). final thought is that the MJ is a no-brainer.

Just had a major drawback to magic jack. Outside of the fact that they will just drop calls from time to time. IF YOU USE A CONFERENCING CALLING SERVICE magic jack will now block that number from connecting. Instead they will make you try to use there conferencing calling service instead. VERY POOR BUSINESS DECISION. I won't renew over this.

I can't seem to get an answer to this question. I have ONLY a cell phone. To use Magic Jack, do I need a land line? If I buy a regular phone, can I plug it into the Magic Jack and USB port, or does the phone have to be a working land line? If you know the answer, could you send me specific, step-by-step directions on how to use Magic Jack? I am especially interested in making international calls.
Thanks to whoever might answer this.

Do I have to keep my computer on all the time, in order for me to receive or make phone calls with the magic jack?
