Ulteo brings OpenOffice 2.3 online, but it’s crawling!

Ulteo has brought OpenOffice version 2.3 online. Go to Ulteo.com, and fill up some simple profile information then you’ll get an account to login and start using the OpenOffice online. The online OpenOffice by Ulteo requires Sun’s original JVM (Java Virtual Machine), different from some other online office suites such as Google Docs or Zoho, which rely on DHTML/AJAX for delivering fantastic web apps with high user interactiveness.

Although I’ve been a big fan of Java language, doing couple of development of applications on the server-side Java, but I don’t really appreciate much for the kind of desktop Java apps that involve heavy loading of the Java GUI UI. The online OpenOffice launched by Ulteo.com is an Applet web app, which takes pretty long time to download some of the UI components and consumes pretty much memory. Imagine, the OpenOffice requires extremely rich UI and definitely this takes some time to load.

The Ulteo’s online OpenOffice works similarly to Google Docs/Spreadsheet and Zoho, which allows you to create, store, share your office documents online, and you can get it printed in PDF format. You’re given with 1GB free storage and you can create various OpenOffice documents online including Writer, Impress, Calc, Draw, Math and Base.

Anyway, I’ve had several attempts to use the Ulteo’s online OpenOffice, but none of them was a success. I encountered a few problems such as failing to start session and server busy. The two screen shots on top are what I got from Ulteo’s development section. According to the Ulteo page, shown above that its server is getting a big rush that would load extremely slow. Maybe I could only try it some days later when it gets less ~~busier~~ busy.
