Nowadays, in teens’ minds are all about gadgets, especially the Apple iPod. If you want your other products to be hot selling like high-tech gadgets, you’ve gotta think of a way to blend it well with gadgets. An Australian pet store has a little modification of its fish tank product, which has been turned into a high-tech fish tank, called iPond. The iPond is now capable of keeping fish in it as well as being a portable speaker with headphone jack for hooking up to any audio device like iPod. And selling for a price of $60.
But unfortunately, the iPond has drawn fire from animal rights groups, as they claim that the little iPod has no sufficient space for a fish to live in it.
Melbourne Aquarium officials say the Betta fish sold with the iPond need a 10 liter tank to swim and get a proper amount of oxygen, but the iPond’s tank is only 650 milliliters. Acoustics experts also say sound from the speaker, which is built into the bottom of the iPond, could transfer into fish tank, bringing up another potential hazard – it’s like getting the Betta fish to pop some ecstasy and dance to end its life!

I can personally see why animal rights would not like this. Most of us forget that music generates sound waves and vibrations that are somewhat foreign to fish. While I can’t prove it, I would say that the vibrations made from sounds could cause some very erratic behavior.

That is just awful! There is no where near enough room in there for any fish! And yea, the vibrations really can’t be too fun for the poor betta either!

That is just sick. I hope that this is a joke because you have to be seriously messed up to design something as cruel as that. It’s not just the vibrations and noise from the music, how is the fish supposed to move, turn around, express it’s normal behaviours….be kept clean, fed?? And there is no way it can get enough oxygen in that tiny tank. This is a fake. I’m certain.

Apparently the people behind this awful torture chamber for fish does not know anything about good fish husbandry. Bettas may have originated in rice paddies in Thailand but if you google rice paddies, you will see that they are quite spacious (although shallow). Bettas are tropical fish. They require to be in heated tanks in temperatures between 75 to 80 degrees. There is no room for the poor critter to move. In such small enclosure, the fish owner needs to change the water like 2-3 times a day. Keep in mind Bettas (and all fish) lives in their own toilets. The ammonia from their waste affects their health. Finally there is nothing for the poor fish to do other than to stay put. Bettas are curious and intelligent animals. They like to swim around and through plants. There is no room to put a bridge or a plant in this “tank”. One lap and the fish is done for the day. If people were smart, they would do research first on good fish husbandry and not just stick the poor critter in the first novelty garbage they see like this piece of junk.
