SGT – 3D transistor promises up to 50GHz of processor’s clock speed!

SGT - 3D transistor promises up to 50GHz of processor's clock speed!
Passionate overclockers will never get satisfied with your computer’s clock speed. You’ll always wanna challenge and try every possible way to overclock your computer’s processor. What processor’s clock speed would make you satisfied and might put you a stop in your overclocking run? What about a processor with 50GHz? Here comes a piece of news that will definitely make you excited. A Japanese company, Unisantis, has announced a research agreement, going to work with Singapore’s Institute of Microelectronics (IME) to come out with a new 3D transistor called SGT (Surrounding Gate Transistor). The specialty of this transistor is, it will be able to bring the clock speed of processor for a big jump over 20GHz and even possible up to 50GHz.

The research team will be headed by Prof Masuoka, who is a heavy guy in memory storage research and invented flash memory storage format. According to him, the 3D structure of SGT is arranged in such a way where there is a vertical silicon pillar surrounded by memory cells, electrical contacts and other components. This design greatly reduces the distance that electrons need to travel within the SGT.

The 3D structure of SGT will definitely produce future IC chips that would have up to 10 times faster in speed compared with the current IC chips that built with transistors having 2D structure. And of course, this will make possible of processor’s clockspeed over 20GHz and even more. This definitely sounds great but it will probably take many years for the research to come out with something solid for the market.
