NEC cellphone app does spoken Japanese to English translation

December 1st, 2007 by ketyung

NEC cellphone app does spoken Japanese to English translation Good news for Japanese travellers. NEC has developed a cellphone application that can instantly translate your Japanese words into English. This definitely comes in handy for Japanese who intend to travel to some European and American countries. The cellphone app needs only one second to capture your speech in Japanese and show it on the screen. And another second later, the English version of your words will appear.

The application consists of a voice-recognition system and translation functions, which are compact enough to operate on a microchip on cellphone without any external help. The translation app is capable of recognizing 50,000 Japanese words. Anyway, there are still some glitches that NEC has to work on, such as improving the precision of recognizing a person’s voice. And after all this, the next version is to provide a direct translation to English vocal instead of text only. I wish there would be a version that could translate spoken English into Japanese words or vocal.
