We hate spam! But spam keeps increasing! I’ve also been into fighting spam recently that I set up a spam filtering using SpamAssassin and Bayes for my office mail server. But I’m still facing problem to get the score right and effectively filter out all the spams! Nowadays, there are plenty of spam filtering software and solution out there including from the open source, and also the commercial versions. No matter how much effort that we’ve put into fighting spam, but it seems like spam is not getting lesser but more!
Bill Gates ever mentioned in 2004, at World Economic Forum in Switzerland that spam would be solved two years later. But till today, spam is worse than ever. No matter you like it or not, spam will create a new world record this year and is the first time that the total number of spams, 10.8 trillion, will surpass the total number of person-to-person e-mails sent, which is only 10.5 trillion, according to market researcher IDC.
There are many types of spams out there such as PDF spam, MP3 spam, Pump-and-dump spam, E-card spam etc. Unwanted commercial e-mail touting Viagra, get-rich-quick schemes and more is growing by electronic leaps and bounds: an Internet-buckling 60 billion to 150 billion messages a day. So, finally, we would only remain as the losers in fighting spams? Eliminating spam is “a war you cannot win,” says Greg Toto, vice president of products and operations at computer security firm BigFix.
