Still remember the LifeSaver bottle that could turn dirty water into clean and drinkable water in just couple of seconds? Here comes a straw that works similarly to the Life Saver bottle, which is able to filter dirty water instantly into drinkable water while you’re sucking the dirty water up into your mouth. I was first thinking that this straw would be called LifeSucker, but in fact it’s not. Of course, it’s got a better name, which is called LifeStraw. The LifeStraw should come in handier than the LifeSaver bottle due to quite a number of reasons, such as it is a small and portable personal water filtration tool that is much cheaper, smaller in size, and easier to carry around. Just hang it around your neck, when you’re really thirsty along your journey, you could anytime stop by a dirty little pond and start sucking up water from it.
The LifeStraw is made of durable plastic, is a sealed unit with no moving parts and contains a number of internal filters but needs no batteries to work. To use it, just tip it to the water source and suck on it to draw the purified water up. The straw measures 10 inches long and just over 1 inch in diameter. Each straw is capable of filtering up to 700 litres of water. It can also remove bacteria and viruses such as: Shigella, Salmonella, Staphylococcus Aureus and E .Coli, which cause Diarrhea, Dysentery, Typhoid, and Cholera. It’s actually been around for a few years and has won few awards such as the 2005 International Design Award and the Well-Tech 2006 Innovation Technology Award.
