The use of open source operating system such as Linux is definitely a great idea to attract more developers into it for coming out with better apps and modules and eventually will make a great product. Besides Google, there are some other small players doing it too. A six-person startup, Bug Lab is doing a modular computer system that resembles a set of electronic Legos. The system and the modules will run open source operating system, Linux. The system is called “Bug”, which it starts off from a BugBase brain module.

The BugBase brain module is equipped with an ARM1136JF-S CPU and 128MB of RAM. Additional features include built-in WiFi, a rechargeable battery, USB, Ethernet, and a mini LCD with button controls. The unit measures 5 x 2.5 x 0.6 inches says Bug Labs, and is about the weight of an iPhone. Each BugBase brain can expand with up to four BugModules. Bug Lab’s move hopes to attract more developers and form a community into developing hardware and software modules for its product. This would be the future trend that consumer electronics will become community electronics.
