Flash memory breakthrough: Samsung’s single chip is equivalent to 80 DVDs!

Flash memory breakthrough: Samsung's new chip is capable of holding the equivalent of 80 DVDs! Another storage capacity breakthrough that will be brought to us by Samsung for our portable gadgets. Samsung claims that they have developed the world’s most powerful chip for use in memory cards for gadgets. The 64 gigabit (Gb) chips when used in flash memory for portable gadgets such as MP3 players, would make them capable of holding the equivalent of 80 DVDs. Meaning an MP3 player that comes equipped with only a single of these 64Gb chips would be capable of holding up to 18,000 songs.

The chip will be built using circuits with a minimum feature size of just 30 nanometres. Samsung is making the new chip as NAND flash, which is one of the two types of flash that offers higher storage and faster speeds than the cheaper NOR flash. And there is a plan to combine couple of chips together that would boost higher storage capacity that would be possibly used to replace hard drives in laptops. Anyway, Samsung is not alone looking into the storage breakthrough for flash memory. Their rival, Toshiba also claimed that they had started looking into the 30nm technology earlier this month. And the two companies will have some solid products to show us in 2009.

    how can you store 80 dvds on a single 64 gigabit chip? that’s only 8 gigabyte (GB)!

    Lies! LOL. JK

    But I’m confused… they claim they can use enought together to create a maximum of 128GB of storage, and that equals 80 DVDs?

    DVD (Layer 1) = 4.7GB
    DVD (2 Layers) = 8.5

    80DVDs = at least 376GB (single layered) OR 680GB (dual-layered).

    aren’t both 376 AND 680 greater than 128. Sounds like somebody needs to get their facts straight – and I don’t think it’s me.

    Hi, of course, the BBC source says 80 DVDs really kinda confusing to everybody. And the big question now is how the 128GB can hold 80 DVDs? Based on searching for more info, the original source could miss something i.e either it refers to 80 compressed feature films with DVD quality, instead of literally 80 DVDs or It refers to those mini DVD that only 1.4GB each :)

    goldcoaster Says:

    No, can’t be the small DVDs because the 64Gb is only 8GByte – at most two DVD movies. 128 aroung 4 movies – even if they have their bits and bits messed up they are still wrong!

    Forgot to say – even Ketyung has got his b (bit) and B (byte) wrong :)

    ketyung Says:

    Hi goldcoaster… really the chip is a 64Gb (bit) … the 128GB is about 16 of these chips combined i.e. 8GBx16=128GB :) I did miss to tell about Samsung says they can combine 16 of these chips to form a 128GB that could be used to replace HDD in laptop :)

    Some other sources say that Samsung claim they’re able to claim maximum of 16 of these 64Gb or 8GB chip to make up a 128GB, The big question is how 128GB holds up to 80 DVDs? Considering 1 DVD is 4.7GB for single layer…..Basically u need 376GB for 80 DVDs , that will need at 47 of these chips to be crammed on 1 device :)

    Nanotech memory makes terabyte thumb drive possible, is to replace flash memory!- by Gadget, shop online blog of TechChee.com Says:

    [...] There have been quite a number of good news about memory storage capacity breakthrough brought to us by the industry and some researchers recently. Although the recent announcement by Samsung would have left you in puzzle about how on earth 16 of the 64Gb chips could hold equivalent to 80 DVDs? But, lets forget about Samsung and look at a more promising new type of memory than the flash memory. The researchers at Arizona State University have developed a low-cost, low-power computer memory that could put terabyte-sized thumb drives in consumers’ pockets within a few years. [...]
