Intel seems to be pretty aggressive in looking for the next big thing, perhaps the next Google in the Internet cloud. With many thousands of web 2.0 software and applications have mushroomed over the Internet in recent years, Intel has decided to take one step ahead, and created a bookmarking site similar to KillerStartups.com or SimpleSpark.com, which allows public to submit and vote on new up-and-coming applications or companies. This bookmarking website is called Cool Software, which will be the central repository for Intel to predict who is the next Google, before it becomes Google, so their always ready investing arm, Intel Capital, can hit the jackpot at the most right time.
Cool Software site was first operated by Intel internally only before opening it to public on the 8th. The site at first grew internally where Intel employees from different departments across the globe contributing their favorite software finds, and eventually the decision was to open it to the public.
Lets see what the public will do for Intel’s Cool Software. Hopefully, they won’t leave Intel with full of spam. Worth mentioning is the site is built based on open-source Pligg project but has some proprietary modifications, of course some controls and filtering that Intel has injected. And the most important is the big name behind is Intel, which we could expect only serious apps to be submitted to the site and perhaps more venturing into building more cool apps in order to attract Intel’s attention.
