When the rumors started rumbling about Google was working on a cellphone that would probably be the biggest rival of iPhone, everybody was simply so eager and started waiting for the official and final words from Google to confirm the Google Phone was real. But, what has been reported by New York Times would have probably shattered many people’s dreams.
According to NYT, Google wanna have its footprint everywhere to leverage the mobile phone’s advertising potential. In short, Google is not creating a device to be the rival of the iPhone. Instead, Google is working on a software, an OS for the mobile world that will be an alternative to Windows Mobile from Microsoft and other OSes. And this Google mobile OS will be made free and available as an open source software. The move of Google is purely to lead the creation of an open source OS for the mobile world to compete with Microsoft’s Windows Mobile. So, Google is still on its own track, which the right track for them is to work on software instead of hardware.
But, think deeper, even though Google is working on an OS, it still needs some kind of device to run the OS and the Google-packaged software. Would Google seek a partner to build the device or they’ll talk to phone manufacturers to offer free with their OS? Perhaps, we would get to see some Nokia phones, PDAs like HTC, Dopod and O2 to be loaded with Google OS and software packages in the near future.
