When I first learned about Linux back in about 8 years ago, I always had my PC to run multiple operating systems. I still remember that I had maximum 5 OSes on one single PC, which they were the Slackware, Caldera, Redhat, Windows 98 and also Windows NT. Of course, I was pretty proud of my PC at that time that I always conveyed the message about the great product I had among friends.
But today, my interest on running multiple operating systems on one PC has subsided. Anyway, it should be lots of fun and challenging being able to run couple of OSes on one PC. That’s why there are some guys out there striving to load as many operating systems as possible onto their PCs.
A guy, who is a member of JustLinux has posted on the forum that he managed to load 145 operating systems onto one single PC. I guess this could be the world record so far. The 145 operating systems on his system include 3 versions of DOS, 5 versions of Windows, and 137 flavors of Linux. In order to achieve this, he had to create 152 partitions on 4 hard drives to get it up and running. And I think he is using the Linux GRUB loader to load all these OSes and it could be another world record i.e. longest GRUB menu in the world. The booting process should be pretty slow on his system as it definitely takes time for the boot loader to find the OS to load.
One of the reasons that he could achieve hundred over operating systems on one computer, of course it’s today’s hard disk size is much larger than before. Anyway, I don’t think there is any useful practical use of having 145 operating systems on a PC. It’s basically meant for fun or some kind of excitement as what I did to test out the capability and how great Linux boot loader was that could load multiple operating systems.
