Found on digg. This concept of making use of pedaling your bicycle to charge your cell phone shouldn’t be any new concept, right? I don’t think there is any specialty behind. It’s simply similar to how the little dynamo produces electricity to power the front light of your bicycle while you’re pedaling. Or maybe, I’m wrong! Anyway, lets continue the story after the jump…
This is the DIY project of a third year engineering student from Dombivli (Mumbai, India), Bhaskar, who developed a bicycle that will generate electricity when pedalled for charging mobile phones of any brand. And his design received the KDMC mayor’s award on Friday.
It took this guy two years for getting this cellphone-charging bicycle done, and he’d spent only less than a thousand rupee to make. The little specialty is this bicycle can charge any brand of cellphone, thanks to its regulator that keeps the generated current always constant no matter what the speed of pedaling is.
Bhaskar has received couple of awards for his design even one of them during its prototyping stage. But the guy will not stop there, he is striving to even incorporate talking system into his bike. By end of December, this year, he hopes his bike able to warn cyclists about potholes ahead and will say sorry if it misses one. And he’s even thinking of making a bike that could fly that is modeled after the Wright Brothers’ airplane!
How is the cellphone charged?
An extra chain is attached to the rear wheel, which is connected to a micro-dynamo (a unit generating electricity) attached to cycle’s carrier. As you pedal the cycle, the dynamo rotates to generate electricity. The electricity is then passed towards the circuit fixed on the bell attached to handle. The circuit also has a LED, which confirms reception of electricity. A cable coming out from circuit has plug, which can be connected to a cellphone to charge it. A chain is connected to the micro dynamo and cycle’s gear box. As you pedal the cycle forward, the chain rotates the gear box.
Get it? Sounds cool? It’s probably hard for those who can easily reach out for electricity to imagine how hard it’s to obtain electricity for charging your cell only in those underdeveloped countries.
