If you’re a Nokia cellphone user then you could be at pretty high risk of your cellphone’s battery will explode while charging. Nokia just issued a product advisory related to the BL-5C, Nokia-branded battery.
Yes, please note it’s Nokia-branded, not the kind of 3rd party batteries to blame here. They’re those batches of batteries manufactured in between December 2005 and November 2006, said to be at risk of “dislodge.” These batches of batteries consist of around 46 million pieces, are all manufactured by Matsushita aka Panasonic in between the said period. The release tells that the Nokia branded BL-5C battery could go short circuit during charging, which will lead to explosion.
Nokia even claimed that there were no serious cases so far, only about 100 incidents of overheating reported globally. Perhaps, Nokia didn’t consider the case reported by Engadget early in 2005 as a serious case – the case which a man lost his leg due to the Nikia-branded battery exploded and Nokia was sued for that for 26K. The BL-5C is one of just 14 different batteries used in Nokia products. Be sure to check the list here if you’re the unlucky one who happened to have a battery on your Nokia cellphone that falls into the high-risk category.
