It won’t be a surprise that robots are being used at those factories dealing with heavy industry. As no doubt that robots are definitely much more tolerable in the stressful environment and can carry out heavy tasks that human can’t perform.
But now, even carrying out much lighter tasks, such as just to social around or to interact with humans, as the receptionist, robots are the more preferable employees instead of human. And their wages seem to be much higher than what the human would get for that post, as a receptionist.
The Mitsubishi robots, which are called Wakamaru are being hired out in Japan for $1,000 a day. I think this is very much higher wage than a human receptionist would get for a day. Of course, if you wanna hire the robot for longer period, such as 1 year, then you’d only need to pay $25,000 for a year for its service.
To be a qualified receptionist, of course, the few important points are the politeness, sociable etc. But human like us will get emotional sometime, perhaps, you had a bad night with your spouse or somehow because of your little pride. All these will likely cause you be little rude to the customers or carry no smile at all while facing them.
For the robots, everything is pre-programmed, which they’ll perform exactly the kind of task it’s programmed to do. The Wakamaru robot is 1-meter tall while standing. It moves on wheels, boosts a yellow shell and carries a rather adorable smile. He is capable of recognizing face too and able to have simple conversations with custmers with a vocab of 10,000 words (Japanese only?).
He will always thank the customers while they’re waiting and can sing a song to entertain them. Now, you know, why robots are much more preferable than human as the receptionists!
