If you have been thinking of taking part in the Second Life virtual world, but haven’t done so so far, due to your computer is too slow. And you have no budget to have a big jump for the upgrade of your computer. No worry, there is a pretty light weight web application out there that lets you access the basic functionalities in Second Life. I like this this light-weight web app pretty much as it’s written in Ajax. It’s called AjaxLife and it’s product of a student, Katharine Berry. Having it, you can have your web browser to login to your Second Life account and to access the basic map, teleporting, local chat and instant messaging. The AjaxLife can be accessed here.

Sigh, it doesn’t seem to have Groups implemented. I’d like to be able to use the group chat, to pick some groups to monitor the chat of.
SL needs to have a “no avatar login mode” for use by programs like this, where you don’t have an avatar or a local position, but can access the non-localized aspects of SL, like the group chat, group notices, linden notices, friends list, etc.
AjaxLife is a nice, very clever program. Why not give it a try and see if it serves your purpose?
