A new world record has just been grabbed by the Venezuelans. They’ve achieved the longest distance that the WiFi signal can now reach up to 382 kilometers, which beat the former record by at least 70km. This was done by the researcher Ermanno Pietrosemoli, which he managed to shoot the 802.11 signal from one mountain to the other mountain in the Venezuelan Andes. And the distance between these two mountains is 382 kilometers (237 miles). Mr Pietrosemoli made use of the Intel’s long-range WiFi tech and a Linksys hardware that costs only $60, to achieve throughput of 3 Mbps in each direction and beat the former record of 310 kilometers (192 miles).

It seems that he didnt give any ideas on how it’s done (although http://www.wifiworldrecord.com/2005writeup.html does on their 125 mile record). Following your link gives the idea that a software hack can be applied to regular equipment, but you need big dishes (10 inches to 12 inches) – is it possible to get those in Malaysia legally? Can those Astro dishes be used?
Then, can solar powered thingies run these things on mountaintops – I think it’s gonna be hard to keep them steady – with all those wind and driving rain etc, not to mention creepy crawlies and perhaps larger animals.

Astro dish? ha, perhaps need some kind of modification. Of coz, that is a DIY project, so he mentioned only he used some linksys hardware
