Here is a mysterious gadget, which someone spotted amongst a co-worker’s collection of connectors. In the middle, there is a big Mickey head on it and two big words “sound converter” engraved on the shiny chrome surface. It looks like a parallel port and a cable with RJ11 connector (phone jack).

I guess this could be a gadget that connects to a phone, which will then convert your voice into the voice of Mickey. So, someone, who is talking to you on the other side of the phone would have thought that they’re talking to the big mouse from the Disney Land. So, guys, make a guess!

The Sound Converter was what passed for a sound card in the early 90′s. Very popular with the demo scene. Very cheap 8-bit DAC via the parallel port. The one I had (looks like a more recent model) didn’t have the “phone cord” coming out of it. It would have been a way to connect the outbound sound to a speaker or amplifier. Also known as the Disney Sound Source or Covox Speech Thing. It was in the <$20 price category. We acquired the schematics from somewhere, hit Radio Shack and built our own for about $20.
