Self heating boxed riceJapanese are pretty smart in finding ways and developing technology to ease their daily tasks and also to help them during emergency and disaster. Of course this is mainly due to they have no choice as they live in a pretty highly disastrous environment. Japan is a country that is geographically unstable, anytime, earthquake and volcanic erruption can happen. Lets look at what the Japanese have recently produced. It’s self-heating boxed rice, which is a box of rice that steams by itself by simply adding cold water to it. It sounds pretty much like the instant cup noodle, which you can just peel off the cover and pour hot water in it then you’ll get a cup of delicious noodle. The rice is precooked at 4,000 atmospheres of pressure during the factory process to preserve it. The boxed rice comes with a special “ingredient” inside, which is an exothermic agent that plays little magic i.e it reacts with the added water to heat up the rice in about 15 minutes. This kind of instant boxed rice is meant for disaster areas. That’s why you need only cold water to cook it, as it’ll be pretty hard to boil water during disaster. According to the news, it’s already in the market and side dishes are being worked out currently. It’s called “Hotto! Raisu” , about $2.75 per box, which includes pickled ume plums.
