I’m the kind of guy who always messes up with paper. I always wish to have a paperless office. Although we’re equiped with all sort of gadgets and computers in our work environment, but it seems like we can’t survive without paper mainly due to the fact that paper has planted its root into our culture. Anyway, lets look at the newly announced Fujitsu’s world’s first electronic paper, which would possibly lead us to a paperless office environment in the future. The Fujitsu’s newly annouced product is called FLEPia.
It’s basically some kind of portable, very very thin (12mm) A4 or A5 screen which enables you to view your data that is uploaded via an SD memory card or wireless LAN. Other than this, it’s also bendable. But as shown in the picture, it doesn’t show the kind of flexibility for bending. Perhaps, what it means that it won’t easily break even it’s bent out of shape.
The FLEPia is able to display up to 4,096 colors on its 768 x 1024-pixel screen. But it looks like the higher the screen resolution the lower its refresh rate. It takes about ten seconds to refresh while using at high color setting and is reduced to two seconds at the lower color setting. It runs Japanese Windows CE 5.0, and is powered by an Intel XScale processor. As mentioned, it has two versions, the A4 and A5, which the A5 weighs 320g and the A4 weighs about 480g.
The screen is touch-sensitive, can be used to display websites and for composing emails using an onscreen keyboard and stylus. It also comes with speaker and a headphone jack for listening to any audio content on the SD card and the battery can last up to 50 hours after charged. The price of this electronic book is defenitely not cheap. The A4 version costs you almost $20K and the smaller A5 is around $13K. Such a price will really put a stop for this thing to become popular among us. Unless you wanna invest it for long term, which could possibly help save your pocket for paper and also printer ink cartridges.
