Samsung just announced today its new 2.5″ SpinPoint hard disks, the M5 and the MP1. M5 is intended for portable electronic devices such as laptop or UMPC. It has two models, the single disk and the dual disk model.
The single disk is having a capacity of ranges between 60 and 160GB, while the dual disk is currently under development, which would provide up to 250GB of storage size.
The new M5 SpinPoint hard drive features a 5400 rpm spin rate, 1.5Gbps SATA interface and 8MB cache memory. PATA models will be added to the lineup in May.
The M5 is built with low noise, vibration and power consumption in mind, which makes it pretty good for small and compact computers, such as Tablet or UPMC.
The MP1 boasts a higher spin rate, 7200 rpm, which offers the industry’s highest storage density of 200GB at great speed, 7200rpm on a 2.5inch disk base with SATA interface. The MP1 is intended for enterprise applications, such as high end workstations, servers, RAID and blade servers. The MP1 also features NCQ (Native Command Queing) feature for high performance and some anti-shock mechanism. Of course it size also allows it to be used on laptop or even UMPC, if you don’t mind about the price.

After knowing the Samsung SpinPoint 2.5-inch SATA hard drive, the M5, which has a great storage capacity of 250GB, again, Samsung’s got another one in its SpinPoint series, which is targetted for the UMPCs and they’re also having high storage capacity. The newly announced Samsung SpinPoint hard drive is the 1.8 inch SpinPoint N2. Such a small physical size is definitely meant for those ultra portable devices such as UMPCs or perhaps, it can also go into future generations of iPods without any issue. And the SpinPoint N2, once again got another “first in the market” title for its storage size, 120GB, for Samsung. The little N2 spins at 3,600rpm or 4,200rpm with a 15-ms average seek time. Its power consumption is definitely low enough, which takes only sub-1 watt, to help keep your portable device fully portable (Low consumption meaning your postable’s battery could last longer and there is no need to find power source to recharge between uses).
