Salesforce.com, the leading hosted CRM service provider, has recently released a new content management platform, called Apex Content.
The Apex Content is one of Salesforce’s efforts of integrating Internet web 2.0 technology into its enterprise software solution. Apex Content basically allows the building of applications around unstructured documents, such as office documents, emails, video/pictures and HTML to be integrated to other Salesforce applications, such as its well-known CRM.
Apex Content is built with all the web 2.0 features in mind. Such as one of its components, ContentExchange, which allows users to organize documents by tags and share them within the enterprise. Other than tagging, users can also rate, comment on documents and they’ll get automated files recommendation based on the document’s meta data. There are also different channels of RSS feeds, which users can subscribe based on tag, authors etc.
Since it’s with web 2.0 in mind, then Ajax shouldn’t be out of the picture. Its interface is Ajax-based, but is considered relatively plain. The Ajax interface consists of tabs for managing your requested workflow tasks, searching files, contributing content, managing subscriptions, running reports, and viewing dashboards. Other web 2.0 effect that can be seen on the interface are tag cloud, mouse over preview that shows the meta data of the files. The technology behind Apex Content was originally developed by Koral Technologies, which Salesforce acquired in March 2007.
