A group of Dutch researchers just rolled out their product, claimed as the world’s first open source car at the at the AutoRAI car show in Amsterdam. The car is called “c,mm,n“, which is supposed to be pronounced as “common”.
Open source here means the car is running on some open source software or firmware, but it’s unclear if the operating system of the car is Linux. It could be a modified kernel of Linux or some embedded version. The openness of the “c,mm,n” extends to the way that you can get your hands on the vehicle’s complete technical drawings and blueprints. And you can also submit your own tweaks and improvements for others to do as they please with. It’ an environmentally-friendly one, which comes with a hydrogen engine and it also lets all the “c,mm,n” drivers share traffic information with one another.
The opensourceness on gadgets and vehicles definitely is good, due to some huge cost reduction on production and flexibility on customization up to the user level. But there should be some control for the openness, especially on the vehicles. It can be fatal if the openness extends to even anybody could freely modify the software loaded on the vehicles.
