Here is another new venture by Microsoft, it’s into VOIP handset market, which has now prepared itself into some development that involves some sound engineering. Microsoft is currently working on a new virtual headphone. As you know, we need to be attached to our PC and put on headset in order to have VOIP session. The kind of virtual headphone means you do not need to wear a headset and you don’t have to be in front of your PC and you can just walk around while having a VOIP session.
What I can understand here is Microsoft is developing an algorithm, which allows them to control or direct sound wave. The kind of control will allow the sound produced by a set of speakers to be directed into an intended person’s ear. As if creating a narrow path for the sound wave to travel and the sound will only end up at the destination and no others. For those who’re just a few inches outside of the narrow path or focal point of the sound waves, are unable to hear anything at all. So it works like a virtual headphone. Furthermore, Microsoft’s algorithm can be used by a wide range of inexpensive speakers that could be put into computer monitors. While having a VOIP session, the person can simply walk around in the office. And the virtual headphone will rely on some microphone and camera to determine the person’s position and distance.
Basically, the control and focusing sound isn’t something new, which has been adopted by various fields such as ultrasound equipment, used to image fetuses in utero and find cancerous tumors for years.
