Based on my post about the Option HSUPA modem, Fenton has raised a question, although I’ve explained in my replied comment but I’d like to write a post here to give you a better understanding of the difference between the two.
As we all know, we’re all getting wireless nowadays. When you stop by at a coffeeshop or a restaurant or some shopping complex, you’ll be able to use their WiFi connection to start posting on your blog. But if you’d been wandering around, you’d have noticed that not all coffeeshops or complexes are having WiFi/Hotspot for you. WiFi is mostly available in city areas. The coffeeshops or shopping complexes that provide WiFi hotspot to their customers, will need to subscribe to Internet broadband services, such as DSL or cable modem etc. And the WiFi is given by having a WiFi router or access point to provide the signal to your WiFi-capable computer/laptop (Through a wireless network card but all most laptops come with a built-in one nowadays). To access the Internet, your computer/laptop is to tap on their Internet broadband connection via their WiFi router/access point. As we’ve seen before we can also do so by subscribing to any Internet broadband service and have the WiFi booster to extend the signal to our neighborhood, so they can access Internet and enjoy blogging as we do. So, it’s clearly that there is a limitation of coverage for WiFi.
How about HSUPA? In plain English, it’s kind of channel that will be incorporated into the 3rd generation (3G) or higher mobile phone network to give you high speed of Internet download and upload. Mobile phone network has a very much bigger coverage, normally across the entire country and even can reach some rural areas. In short, you can treat HSUPA is the Internet broadband service provided by your cellphone service provider, whereas DSL is provided by your Telco. The difference is cellphone providers’ HSUPA is wireless and Telco’s DSL is wired. To the users, HSUPA allows you to access Internet, even though you’re in rural area or those areas you can’t get WiFi hotspot provided your country has a wide coverage of the 3G mobile network. HSUPA is still new even in most of the first world countries. Most of them are planning to implement it in year 2007 or 2008. Take a look at Wikipedia about the term HSUPA, scroll down to the bottom of the page, you’ll see that Australia is planning having it in 2007, whereas US Cingular was to implement it by end of last year. Most recent cellphone models will have 3G/HSUPA support but not your PC/laptop. In order for your PC to be able to tap to the cellphone network HSUPA service, then you need a device in between, such as the Option HSUPA modem. Which you can just connect the HSUPA modem to your laptop/PC’s USB port to allow you to access the Internet with high speed wirelessly!

Thanks for the clarificationmm, I’m bit dumb in technical stuff. You are really speed demon in response. I highly appreciate it.
