I’m not too sure if this speaker really behaves as what it’s said. As far as I know, if you wanna enjoy surround sound system then you have to be in the center and having few speakers surrounding you. The dodecahedra speaker being developed at the University of São Paulo, Brazil, is aiming to give omnidirectional effect. It is made up of a 12 speakers, with each single speaker turned at a certain angle to cover 360 degrees both horizontally and vertically. To me, this speakers system sounds like giving some kind of dispersed effect. But not really, if you compare it with just a single unit of ordinary speaker system, the difference is the dodecahedra speaker will give the same sound quality no matter you’re at its front or side or back, whereas other speakers don’t do so. Sound quality will definitely drop if you’re at the side or back of an ordinary speaker. Ummm, now I get it!
This omnidirectional speaker could be used both indoor and outdoor and there isn’t need for installation of extra equipment. The idea is to have one dodecahedra speaker to replace all speakers, which this also reduces installation cost as it needs only one cable. The researches are looking for investors for mass production of the speakers.
