What is Windows Home Server (WHS)? It’s a new product of Microsoft unveiled at CES 2007, which is meant for families that have multiple PCs and digital devices, wish to build up a home network and even connect all your relatives and friends around the world. It’s a software product but its hardware must come from Microsoft’s leading partners (such as HP MediaSmart Server).
The Windows Home Server will help families with multiple PCs connect their home computers, digital devices and printers, in order to easily store, protect and share their treasured photos, music, videos and documents. By automatically backing up home PCs, centralizing a family’s digital “stuff” and allowing access to it away from home, Windows Home Server will help simplify and enhance family life.
Here are some facts of the Windows Home Server:
1. It’s headless, embedded, i.e you can’t just buy WHS and install on your old PC
2. No web interface, interaction to the client PC via client-based software or SMB (Server Message Block)
3. No direct streaming of media to Media Center Extender but it can stream directly to Windows Media Connect-enabled devices.
4. No RAID, but instead uses a RAID-like drive pooling system with built-in redundancy. Expanding capacity is as simple as adding additional drives internally or externally via USB
5. The client software, which is installable only on Windows PCs (duh) monitors PC health, manages backups, and supports full disk images and versions. If your computer crashes hard you can pop in an restore CD and it’ll pull the disk image over the network
6. Your WHS device gets registered with your Windows Live account and is made easily-findable by authorized parties. You can even connect to it via Live and pipe a Remote Desktop connection to a PC on your home network through this Home-finding Live feature
